The DHL Stormers’ opening United Rugby Championship match against Connacht in Galway has produced an intriguing selection debate before a ball is kicked.
Jurie Matthee gets the No. 10 jersey, Yaqeen Ahmed waits for his opportunity and new acquisition Haashim Pead is still waiting to make his first appearance for the Stormers.
For coach John Dobson, there is no settled long-term answer yet.
Matthee is the incumbent. Ahmed is the highly rated challenger. Pead is another option waiting to be integrated.
Asked why Matthee was selected ahead of Ahmed, Dobson made it clear the decision is about the present rather than closing the door on the future.
“Yuri’s the incumbent for now, but we’re going to get game time,” Dobson said.
That “for now” is doing plenty of work.
Dobson was particularly enthusiastic about Ahmed, whose emergence has generated considerable interest around the Stormers.
“Yaqeen is special,” he said. “There’s just something about him, a steeliness and a toughness that I’m really excited about him.”
For Ahmed, the message is clear: patience will be required, but opportunity is coming.
Dobson also indicated that the discussion around the flyhalf position could move quickly.
“It’s probably a good thing. We started last season and whatever is needed. I know Yuri’s role in it. But it’s going to be tough. Let’s reopen next week that conversation.”
That leaves Matthee with the immediate responsibility of setting the standard.
The more intriguing question may be what happens once Pead enters the equation.
The Stormers have invested in the new acquisition, but Dobson has not yet revealed when Pead will be brought into the match-day squad. His eventual integration could add another dimension to an already developing flyhalf conversation.
Pead’s arrival means the Stormers have another player competing for consideration, while Matthee and Ahmed now have an opportunity to establish their claims through performances rather than potential.
That could make the early URC rounds particularly revealing.
The selection debate is also taking place against a backdrop of deliberate squad rotation.
Riley Norton, Vernon Paulo and Ezekiel Ngobeni will make their Stormers debuts against Connacht, while André Warner provides experience at scrumhalf.
“We also have the likes of Riley Norton, Vernon Paulo and Ezekiel Ngobeni making their first appearances of what should be long careers with us, while Andre Warner provides the benefit of experience in a crucial position,” Dobson said.
“We are excited for all of them to show what they can do.”
Ben-Jason Dixon and Ntuthuko Mchunu, meanwhile, are travelling but have been held back after a demanding schedule.
“We decided against playing Ben-Jason Dixon and Ntuthuko Mchunu in this match to give them further opportunity to recover from what has been a demanding schedule and be fresh enough to make maximum impact for us,” Dobson said.
Amid all the selection intrigue, Leolin Zas reaches 100 Stormers appearances.
“Leolin has been a stalwart in this team for so many years and has delivered so many incredible moments,” Dobson said.
“He did not have things his own way and came back from serious injury to cement his place as one of the deadliest finishers to have played for the DHL Stormers.”
Yet the most compelling Stormers subplot in Galway may be wearing No. 10.
Matthee has the first opportunity.
Ahmed is waiting.
And Pead has yet to enter the conversation.
Dobson has effectively left the door open. What happens next will be decided on the field.
