Cape Town is preparing for a five-day football feast as the Kapstadt CUP 2026 brings 148 teams from 40 clubs together for a continental youth football showdown during the October school holidays.
The tournament, running from 30 September to 4 October, has grown from a grassroots festival launched in 2010 into a competitive development platform spanning nine age groups, from Under-7 to Under-20.
With teams from South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and beyond, the city’s football pitches will become a melting pot of styles, ambitions and young talent, with every touch, tackle and goal potentially another step on the road towards senior football.
The tournament will feature 5v5, 8v8 and 11v11 football, allowing players to experience different tactical demands as they progress through the age groups.
Among the international newcomers are Zimbabwe’s Igugu Lesizwe, along with Namibian clubs Teenagers FC and Ramblers FC.
South African debutants include Wolves FC, Grassy Park United FC, Caledonians FC, 7 Elite Academy, Panorama FC, Flamingos FC and Rovers FC.
They will enter a field featuring established names such as Stellenbosch FC, AmaZulu FC, Hellenic FC, Antalyaspor JPM and Mamelodi Sundowns FC, creating a fascinating mix of academy structures, grassroots programmes and international competition.
For Tournament Director Zaid Omar, the real trophy is development.
“There is no development without quality competition,” Omar says.
“We have players as young as five years old competing in the Kapstadt CUP and over the years progressing through the different stages of their development towards senior football. The tournament has positively touched the lives of countless young players, with many going on to pursue professional football careers.”
Omar says the event aims to provide more than matches and medals.
“We are proud that the Kapstadt CUP provides a meaningful, turnkey development platform for young African footballers. More importantly, we continue to raise the flag for ‘Play & Respect’.”

The tournament is fully sanctioned by SAFA Cape Town, whose president, Bennett Bailey, says meaningful competition is crucial to youth development.
“The Kapstadt CUP has become an important part of Cape Town’s youth football calendar because it gives young players the opportunity to compete at a high level, experience different styles of football and test themselves against teams from across South Africa and the African continent,” Bailey says.
“Development cannot happen in isolation. Players need meaningful competition, strong coaching environments and opportunities like this to measure their progress.”
Bailey adds that the tournament also provides a platform for Cape Town’s football tradition to connect with the wider continent.
“SAFA Cape Town is proud to sanction and support a tournament that continues to create these opportunities for young footballers,” he says.
The youngest age groups, Under-7 to Under-11, will play at Green Point Urban Park, while the Under-12 to Under-20 competitions will use Green Point Rugby Fields, Hartleyvale Stadium and Generation Sandown Institute.
The Under-12 and Under-14 Cup and Plate finals will be staged at Green Point Athletics Stadium.
The tournament’s opening ceremony takes place at Green Point Athletics Stadium on Friday, 2 October at 18h30, featuring a match-pass involving participating clubs and teams, bringing together players, coaches, families, partners and supporters.
The football carnival is ready. The boots are laced, the pitches await and Cape Town’s next generation of footballers are preparing to write their own small chapters in the beautiful game.
