Twenty-year-old flyhalf Vusi Moyo has barely unpacked after his breakthrough season, yet South African rugby is already placing the keys to the Springbok backline in his hands.
When the Springboks face Wales in Durban on Saturday in their final Nations Championship fixture of the July window, Moyo will headline a quartet of Test debutants that also includes wing Jaco Williams, lock Ruben van Heerden and prop Carlu Sadie. All eyes, though, will be fixed on the gifted Sharks playmaker.
Born on 21 June 2006, Moyo has rocketed through the ranks at breathtaking speed. Earlier this season he was still pulling on the Junior Springbok jersey. Weeks later he made his senior Sharks debut, impressed during training with the world champions and caught the eye with a lively cameo against the Barbarians. Now the youngster finds himself steering the Springboks against Wales.
It is a rise that has left rugby fans rubbing their eyes.
The softly spoken flyhalf combines the calmness of a veteran with the confidence of youth. Standing tall and powerfully built, Moyo attacks the gain line without fear, kicks accurately off both feet and has the silky passing skills to unlock stubborn defences. It is little wonder Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus believes South Africa may have uncovered another long-term No 10.
“It’s every kid’s dream to be part of this Springbok set-up,” said Moyo.
“When the call came through on Monday, my heart missed a beat. It’s very special to be around Cobus Reinach and the other players around me. Personally, it’s about making my family and the people that have been with me along the way proud.
“It was very special to get my first cap for the Sharks and then a few weeks later, get called up to this squad, so it’s something I’m excited about and very grateful for.
“It offered me the opportunity to learn from the guys and keep improving because this set-up is much bigger, and you have to make decisions a lot quicker.”
Erasmus has made no secret of his excitement.

“Sometimes you get a really skilful flyhalf, sometimes you get a small, nippy flyhalf. When Handré was a young guy coming through, he was somebody who took the ball to the line,” said the Bok coach.
“I think Vusi, for his age, is a very big boy. He certainly doesn’t stand back from the physical side of the game. He’s nice and calm. It’s Test rugby, so he will be tested in that. He kicks brilliantly off the tee, his restarts are excellent, he kicks to touch well and he kicks well at goal.
“We want to see him in a Test match because what he has shown in training sessions and also in the Barbarians match, he definitely showed a lot. For a big guy, he’s got really soft hands.”
Moyo will not carry the burden alone. Veteran campaigners Pieter-Steph du Toit, Damian de Allende, Jesse Kriel and Malcolm Marx provide a wealth of experience around him, giving the young flyhalf every opportunity to play his natural game.
Saturday offers Moyo the chance to announce himself on rugby’s biggest stage. South Africa has produced legendary No 10s over the years. The latest chapter starts in Durban, where a fearless youngster with golden boots and ice-cold composure gets the opportunity to turn promise into pedigree.
