The high-protein market is no longer a marathon with a lonely leader. It has become a crowded road race where every brand is chasing the finish tape, and First Choice believes it has found another winning stride.
Following the sustained success of its ready-to-drink High Protein beverages, First Choice has expanded into functional snacking with the launch of its High Protein Fuel Bars, signalling an ambitious move into one of the fastest-growing nutrition categories.
The protein race has a new contender. #FirstChoice has expanded its popular @RecoveryDrinkSA range with Fuel Bars delivering 15g of protein, collagen and Vitamin B12 in three flavours. #Protein #Fitness #HealthySnackshttps://t.co/5EeI66QEJF

Like a runner settling into race rhythm, the company is building momentum instead of standing at the starting line. The launch reflects a broader consumer shift towards convenient nutrition that supports increasingly active lifestyles without sacrificing flavour.
Marisa Maccaferri, Marketing Executive at Woodlands Dairy Group, says strong year-on-year growth in the High Protein beverage range made the extension into bars a natural progression.
“We’ve experienced consistent year-on-year growth, reflecting sustained market demand. The Fuel Bars are designed to provide a convenient, nutritious snack for fitness enthusiasts and consumers looking to increase or manage their protein intake.”
Protein has evolved from a niche sports nutrition ingredient into mainstream grocery currency. Consumers are increasingly seeking products that promote satiety, support weight management and complement active lifestyles. Even confectionery brands have entered the protein race, turning supermarket shelves into a nutritional relay where innovation rarely pauses for breath.
Each Fuel Bar delivers 15g of protein, contains collagen and provides Vitamin B12. The preservative-free and trans-fat-free recipe is designed to support muscle growth and repair, help reduce age-related muscle breakdown and provide sustained energy throughout the day.
Brand Manager Thulile Memela believes the newcomer carries plenty of horsepower beneath its wrapper.
“It truly packs a punch.”
She says the packaging mirrors the established High Protein drinks range while highlighting key nutritional benefits for quick recognition. Marketing support will include digital campaigns, sports activations, e-commerce sampling and in-store promotions aimed at converting loyal beverage customers into snack buyers.
Available in Salted Caramel, Strawberry Vanilla and Peanut Butter, the bars retail for R29.99 each through Evergreen Stores, Takealot.co.za and First Choice Dairy Shops, with wider national retail distribution planned.
In a market where protein products are multiplying faster than runners charging downhill, standing still is the slowest strategy of all.
First Choice is betting that consumers want nutrition that keeps pace with busy lives, proving that the next big leap in performance may arrive not in a bottle, but in the palm of a hand.
