The race for marathon supremacy has stormed into Cape Town with the arrival of the adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3, a shoe engineered to glide across asphalt like a cheetah slicing through open savannah.
For the first time in South Africa, runners attending the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon Expo from 21 to 23 May will have access to the globally coveted supershoe, released in extremely limited quantities after selling out within minutes internationally.
Built as adidas’ official sub-2-hour marathon shoe, the Pro Evo 3 pushes the boundaries of performance with the precision of a relay baton exchange executed at full tilt. The shoe weighs under 100 grams, making it the lightest marathon racing shoe ever produced by adidas.
“Our goal was two digits on the scale, with better performance than we’ve ever had,” said Stephan Scholten, VP Product at adidas.
At the core of the innovation is adidas’ next-generation Lightstrike Pro Evo foam, nearly 50% lighter than previous versions while delivering explosive energy return and cushioning over a 39mm stack height. The newly developed ENERGYRIM system integrates carbon technology with lightweight foam to create a spring-loaded sensation designed to propel runners forward stride after stride.
The upper, inspired by kitesurfing sail technology, has been stripped to its essentials for a feather-light fit, while Continental™ rubber in the forefoot provides grip without dragging down speed.
“To have the Pro Evo 3 available in South Africa at such a major moment for local running is incredibly special,” said Tom Brown, Senior Brand Director at adidas South Africa.
“This shoe represents the future of marathon racing, and bringing it to the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon Expo gives local runners the chance to experience one of the most advanced performance innovations in the sport right now.”
The shoe arrives amid a golden surge for adidas distance running. Athletes Sabastian Sawe and Yomif Kejelcha shattered the sub-2-hour marathon barrier at the London Marathon, clocking 1:59.30 and 1:59.41 respectively. Tigist Assefa also blazed into the history books with a women-only marathon world record of 2:15.41.
Alongside the Pro Evo 3, adidas will also launch the Hyperboost Edge at the expo. The Pro Evo 3 will retail for R9 999, while the Hyperboost Edge is priced at R4 499.
