Markus Muller set for youngest Stormers debut vs Glasgow

The DHL Stormers are primed to roll the dice on youth and milestone magic when they host Glasgow Warriors in their final Vodacom United Rugby Championship home fixture at DHL Stadium on Saturday.

All eyes will drift to the replacements bench, where 18-year-old Markus Muller stands ready to carve his name into franchise folklore. If introduced, the promising back will become the youngest player ever to wear the Stormers jersey, joining Damian Willemse in an exclusive club of teenage trailblazers.

It is a selection that crackles with intent, a bold play from a side sharpening its edge for the looming knockout rounds.

The backline carries a refreshed look, with Willemse slotting in at fullback and Wandisile Simelane patrolling the right wing. Warrick Gelant falls out of the matchday squad, while Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu pulls the strings at flyhalf in what will be his 50th appearance for the franchise.

Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s rise has been as smooth as a perfectly timed offload. From his debut in a URC quarterfinal at the same venue in 2022, he has grown into a conductor capable of dictating tempo and slicing open defensive lines. His half-century cap arrives in a clash that carries the weight of playoff positioning.

Up front, the Stormers pack sees a reshuffle designed to bring fresh muscle to the collision zone. Paul de Villiers, Ruben van Heerden, Neethling Fouché and André-Hugo Venter all step into the starting lineup after making their impact from the bench last week. Their inclusion hints at a forward battle that could resemble a slow-burning arm wrestle before erupting into open-field chaos.

Director of Rugby John Dobson framed the encounter as a pivotal moment in the campaign.

“With the play-offs getting closer all the time, it is important that we make the most of this opportunity to play at home in front of our fans,” he said.

“It has been a good week of training, and we are looking forward to seeing what the players coming into the mix can add in what is a crucial match against a strong Glasgow team.”

Dobson reserved special praise for his young playmaker, highlighting the calmness that belies Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s age.

“There is a lot expected of Sacha, and he handles the pressure so well. He will be a key player in our squad for years to come, and hopefully we can make this match memorable for him,” he said.

The bench carries a blend of steel and spark, with JJ Kotzé and Keke Morabe joining a group capable of shifting momentum in the final quarter. Muller’s potential introduction adds an extra layer of intrigue, the unknown factor that can tilt contests.

As the Stormers run out in Cape Town, the equation is simple yet demanding. Build momentum, protect home turf and fine-tune combinations ahead of the playoffs. Against a Glasgow side known for its physical bite and attacking ambition, this clash shapes as both a proving ground and a statement opportunity.
