CAPE TOWN – Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams has reflected on the team’s growth and ambitions as they prepare for their second international friendly against Panama at DHL Stadium on Tuesday night.
South Africa head into the encounter following a 1-1 draw at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday, a performance that provided valuable lessons as the team continues building towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they are set to open their campaign against Mexico.
Speaking ahead of the clash, Williams highlighted the significance of the team’s recent achievements, particularly their impact beyond just results on the pitch.
“We had a wonderful AFCON in Ivory Coast, and we were in a very good space as a team – we managed to qualify,” said Williams.
“We saw what it had done, not only for us but for the country – for everyone in Africa, how happy they were to see South Africa amongst the big tournaments again.
“I don’t think we realise what we’ve achieved as a team over the last few years. Sometimes there’s always the next mission that one is thinking about that you don’t fathom or let it sink in what you’ve achieved.
“Maybe once the World Cup is done, once we’ve retired, that’s when we’ll sit down and see that we’ve done history. Because it’s been a very long time that we’ve been part of it.”
The skipper’s words underline a sense of pride and perspective within the squad, as Bafana continue to rebuild their identity on the international stage.
With the World Cup fast approaching, every match is being treated as a stepping stone towards greater goals.
Williams also spoke about the honour of captaining the national team and the excitement surrounding the upcoming global showpiece.
“And for me, I’m just proud to lead this team,” he said. In good and bad moments, you learn so much – coming to the opening game, we’re excited.
“There are two games that stand out at the World Cup – it’s the opening and the final.
“We’re going to be part of one.”
