Blitzboks close in on HSBC SVNS Cape Town play-off spot

DHL STADIUM – Springbok Sevens have taken a major step toward securing a place in the HSBC SVNS Cape Town play-offs after a hard-fought 19-14 victory over New Zealand in their second match of the tournament.

Tries from Donavan Don, Shilton van Wyk and Ronald Brown proved enough for the Blitzboks to edge past the All Blacks, while Tone Ng Shiu and Scott Gregory crossed the line for New Zealand.

The win means the home side have now made it two from two on the day, following their thrilling 24-21 comeback victory over Fiji in the opening match.

South Africa, who are now top of Pool A with six points, have one match left for the day as they prepare to face Great Britain on Saturday evening.

Winger Selvyn Davids has applauded the courage and determination displayed by the Blitzboks throughout the match.

Davids highlighted the team’s resilience under pressure and their ability to fight until the final whistle.

I think our discipline was a little bit off,” said Davids. “The guys had a hard time in the 6th minute but we worked a little bit harder to overcome that.

“It’s great for us, but we need to focus on the next game, it’s not going to be an easy game.

“We’re going to have to go out there and give it our all, as we did the previous two games.

“I think last weekend in Dubai wasn’t our best tournament – let me say, the first day wasn’t our greatest first day, but the second day we played very great rugby.”
