CAPE TOWN – Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has announced his preliminary squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 in Morocco, marking the first major step in South Africa’s preparations for the continental showpiece.
With anticipation steadily building among supporters, the squad announcement signals the beginning of a crucial preparation phase as Bafana Bafana aim to make a deep run in Africa’s premier football competition.
The 54-player preliminary squad announced on Monday by Broos will be trimmed down to 23 players ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations.
The extended list features the experienced Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Themba Zwane, who returns to the national setup after a lengthy injury layoff that kept him sidelined for several months.
Zwane who is one of the most influential creative players, has not featured for Bafana Bafana since sustaining the injury.
The 2025 edition of AFCON will be hosted in Morocco from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026.
