Mammila laments missed chances in Richards Bay defeat

CAPE TOWN – Chippa United’s struggles deepened following last night’s results, leaving the team anchored at 16th place in the Betway Premiership standings.

The Gqeberha-based side endured their third defeat of the season, falling 1-0 to Richards Bay at Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban.

A lone strike from striker Gabadinho Mhango proved decisive, handing the KwaZulu-Natal side all three points.

Chippa coach Morgan Mammila admitted that his team squandered numerous opportunities that might have altered the result of the match.

“To be honest, the results are not a reflection of the game, but at the end of the day, Richards Bay scored one goal and got three points,” said Mammila.

“We missed a lot of chances. We should have scored one, two or three goals, but that’s the game.

“If you don’t put the back of the net, you lose the match. You can even see how they score, it was a mistake from the goalkeeper and the defender.”

Chippa will host Orlando Pirates at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday, with coach Mammila confident that his side has the ability to secure all three points in the upcoming clash.

“There’s a big one coming up at the weekend, but we’re in the same league,” he said.

It’s 11 against 11, of course, experience here and there, but we’ve also got capable players who can beat any team.

“So I’m not worried about the opponent. I’m worried about my team. They must just apply themselves according to how we train.”

On Tuesday, the club strengthened their squad by announcing the signings of forwards Justice Figareido and Somila Ntsundwana, as well as defender Harold Majadibodu.
