The Cape coast is about to get another rugby storm.

The Stormers and Sharks meet at DHL Stadium on Saturday with old scores simmering beneath the surface, Springbok muscle back in the trenches and the Sharks hunting a hat-trick of United Rugby Championship victories over their coastal rivals.

The Sharks won 30-19 in Cape Town on 24 January, while also beating the Stormers twice last season. Their confidence is now travelling south with them.

Sharks head coach JP Pietersen called the assignment a “lekker challenge” and sees it as a chance to put his side’s rugby DNA under the microscope.

“You can see from the look of the team that it’s going to be a lekker challenge come Saturday,” Pietersen said. “They want to go fast with the loosies they got and a good set-piece with Wilco coming back.

“Both teams have gone with the 6-2 bench split, and one thing they have in common is that it’s going to be a forward-physical battle.”

That battle could resemble trench warfare.

Wilco Louw returns to the Stormers front row for his first appearance in their colours since 2020, while Siya Kolisi shifts to blindside and Deon Fourie offers veteran ammunition from the bench.

John Dobson has selected his strongest available side, with 11 Springboks in the match-day squad and Haashim Pead in line for his Stormers debut. Seven returning Boks will make their first club appearances of the season.

Dobson admits the reunion has been rapid-fire, yet believes the returning internationals have absorbed the Stormers blueprint.

“On cohesion, the guys have fitted in,” Dobson said. “We got them in for separate sessions before and aligned them with our game plan. There was a clear message that they’re going to fit into the Stormers way.”

Wilco’s arrival required little explanation.

“Wilco walks in and just says, ‘I’m home.’ It felt absolutely normal, and they were fully engaged.”

The Sharks will relish the physical examination. Eben Etzebeth and Thomas du Toit give their pack plenty of bite, while Phepsi Buthelezi, Manu Tshituka and Matt Romao bring a hard edge to the loose trio.

Pietersen wants relentless rugby for 80 minutes.

“It’s a tough outing to play away from home. It’s an opportunity and a challenge for us to test our DNA and the way we want to play. We want to be fast, physical and relentless on Saturday.”

The aerial contest could provide the tactical chessboard.

Damian Willemse returns at fullback for the Stormers, while Edwill van der Merwe and Ethan Hooker give the Sharks genuine counter-attacking ammunition.

“Everybody’s just talking about the forwards all the time. It’s good that there’s going to be some backs as well,” Pietersen joked.

“With the forwards, there’s the physicality, and obviously with the backs there’s the flair and the X factor. Both backlines are unbelievable – very skilful, with speed in both teams.”

Pietersen singled out Van der Merwe after his aerial performance against Leinster.

“Obviously, the technical side of the aerial battle will be a big contest. The Stormers and the Sharks probably play a similar game with the aerial contest.”

Stormers captain Ruhan Nel expects the returning Boks to strengthen the leadership spine rather than create competing voices.

“I’m young in this leadership role,” Nel said. “With such strong leaders around you, I’ve learned a lot from them, especially Siya. They’re big voices with a lot of experience.

“We’re all professionals at the end of the day … I’m not worried about that at all.”

With Cobus Reinach and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu also returning, the Stormers possess fresh attacking spark. The Sharks counter with Jaden Hendrikse, Andre Esterhuizen, Jurenzo Julius and the pace of Van der Merwe and Hooker.

Pietersen summed up the equation.

“If we can compete and stay fast, physical and relentless for 80 minutes, that will be the challenge. We’ll adjust, test ourselves and see how it goes.”

At DHL Stadium, there should be nowhere to hide.

The set-piece will be a furnace, the breakdown a battlefield and every kick into the Cape Town sky an invitation to gamble.

For the Sharks, another victory would deepen their grip on the rivalry. For the Stormers, their returning Springbok cavalry has arrived at precisely the moment when reputations, territory and bragging rights are all up for grabs.
