Mphahlele returns for another Durban 5km showdown

Ryan Mphahlele will return to the Boxer Super Run Durban on Sunday, 18 October, carrying the defending champion’s crown and a revealing question mark over his current form.

The Tembisa distance star swept both Boxer Super Run 5km races in Durban and Johannesburg in 2025, turning the short-distance circuit into his personal fast lane. Now the stopwatch awaits its latest verdict.

Mphahlele makes no secret of his ambition. He wants another victory, although he admits his fitness has not reached last year’s level.

“Whenever I line up at a race, I want to win,” he says. “My fitness isn’t anywhere near where it was at this time last year. I’ll definitely compete for the win, but I’ll also use the race to see where my fitness is now.”

That admission adds an intriguing subplot to a race already stacked with expectations.

Durban’s fast, flat course suits Mphahlele’s running style, but familiarity offers no free kilometres. Last year’s victory was earned through a hard-fought finish, and the champion expects the pressure gauge to rise again.

“I enjoy the fast, flat course and expect the tactics to be similar to last year,” he says. “The standard was already very high, and the win didn’t come easily.”

The 5km may be short on paper, but elite road racing has a long memory. A runner can spend four kilometres polishing his tactics before discovering in the final kilometre that the race has teeth.

Mphahlele also sees the event as a test of belief and respect. Confidence can propel an athlete forward, while complacency can send even a favourite tumbling down the finishing order.

Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports, believes Mphahlele’s candid assessment makes his return even more compelling.

“Ryan knows what it takes to win on this course,” says Meyer. “He is also honest about where he is in his preparation.”

The attractive prize purse adds another spark to an Elite Race expected to burn brightly, while Boxer Superstores Head of Marketing Lee-Ann Pillay says Mphahlele’s presence will energise Durban runners and spectators.

With entries sold out, the stage is set at Snell Parade near Blue Lagoon Park. The Elite Women start at 09:45, followed by the Elite Men at 10:00.

For Mphahlele, the road ahead is clear: defend the title, measure the legs and find out whether last year’s winning rhythm is still hiding somewhere in the engine.

On a 5km course, there will be nowhere to hide.
