Twelve months ago Ruben van Heerden stood in the famous black and white jersey of the Barbarians, staring across at the Springboks with hope flickering beneath every tackle and lineout leap. Now fate has flipped the page.

The 28-year-old Stormers lock has been called into the Springbok squad to prepare for next week’s season opener against the Barbarians in Gqeberha, completing a deliciously ironic twist that could make even the rugby gods chuckle.
His promotion comes after Salmaan Moerat was released from camp through injury, with Van Heerden reporting in Johannesburg on Wednesday evening alongside fellow call-ups Phepsi Buthelezi and Carlu Sadie.
The timing could hardly be more poetic.
In an exclusive interview with TheAthlete.co.za a year ago, Van Heerden spoke openly about the privilege of representing rugby’s most famous invitation side and the dream that quietly burned beneath the surface.
“It’s a massive opportunity,” he said. “Playing for the Barbarians is something I’ve always hoped to do. You have to be invited. It’s a real honour.”
For Van Heerden, the occasion also became a classroom filled with rugby royalty.
“It’s been great rubbing shoulders with legends,” he reflected. “You realise these guys, O’Mahony, Sam Cane, Shannon Frizell, they’re human too. I’ve learned so much being around them.”
Even then, his ambition carried the force of a driving maul gathering momentum.
“I’m really going to try and knock down that Springbok door,” he said. “There’s so much depth at lock in South Africa. Some of those guys are heading toward the twilight of their careers. I’m 27. I believe my time is coming.”
Those words now echo with remarkable resonance.
Van Heerden has become a cornerstone of the DHL Stormers engine room, earning his 50th appearance for the Cape side this season after previous spells with the Vodacom Bulls, Hollywoodbets Sharks and Exeter Chiefs.
His relentless work rate and abrasive physicality have long caught the attention of the national selectors, and the latest call-up feels less like lightning from a clear sky and more like thunder finally reaching the ground.

Last year he also spoke warmly of the influence of Barbarians coach Robbie Deans.
“To have someone like Robbie say that, it means the world to me,” Van Heerden said. “I’ve really tried to learn from him. I’d love to get into coaching one day, so I’ve been picking his brain when I can. His rugby mind is something else.”
His humility was equally revealing.
“It’s an honour, but also a challenge,” he said. “I’ll give everything I’ve got. At the end of the day, that’s all I can do.”
That philosophy has carried him from Junior Springbok promise through the grindstone of professional rugby and into one of the most fiercely contested positions in South African rugby.
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus and assistant coach Mzwandile Stick will announce their respective squads for the Barbarians clash and the SA ‘A’ encounter against Zimbabwe next week, with both fixtures taking place at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on 20 June.
For Van Heerden, the compass has finally swung toward the destination he quietly mapped long ago. A year after trying to batter down the Springbok door from the opposite dressing room, he now walks through it carrying his boots, his bruises and a dream that has traded imagination for opportunity.
