CAPE TOWN – TS Galaxy delivered one of the shocks of the season after defeating defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 in a dramatic Betway Premiership clash at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday night.
With the title race on its final stages, Sundowns knew victory in their final league match of the season would place pressure on second-placed Orlando Pirates. However, TS Galaxy had other plans as they produced a spirited display to secure all three points and confirm their top-flight status next season.
The home side made a dream start when Victor Letsoalo opened the scoring in the sixth minute, giving TS Galaxy an early advantage. Sedwyn George then extended Galaxy’s lead in the 17th minute.
Sundowns responded through striker Brayan León, who pulled one back in the 37th minute.
León continued to trouble the hosts and grabbed his second goal of the evening in the 40th minute to level matters at 2-2, as the two sides went into the halftime break all square after an entertaining first half.
However, just a minute into the second half, Mpho Mvelase struck for TS Galaxy to hand the home side a crucial 3-2 lead.
The second half failed to produce more goals, but Galaxy defended bravely to hold off the champions and complete a memorable upset.
The victory moves TS Galaxy to 31 points in 12th position with one game remaining, securing their safety from relegation. Meanwhile, the result has thrown the title into Pirates’ hands.
Pirates now just three points behind Sundowns with two matches still in hand. A Pirates victory against Durban City on Saturday could see them crowned 2025/26 Betway Premiership champions.
The last dance at Mbombela ends in our favor. Three goals, three points.🚀@aQuelle @aQuelleViV#Siyadumuza#TheRockets #TSG pic.twitter.com/sapGumm1vi
