From Bo-Kaap to global stage: Hashim Pead inks major Roc Nation deal

Rising South African scrumhalf Haashim Pead has taken a significant step off the field after signing with Roc Nation Sports International, the global agency representing Springbok stars Siya Kolisi, Cheslin Kolbe, Aphelele Fassi and Jordan Hendrikse.

The 20-year-old, who hails from the Bo-Kaap and is a Bishops graduate, has rapidly emerged as one of the country’s most exciting young talents.

Pead rose to prominence at the 2025 World Rugby U20 Championship in Italy, where he was named Junior Springbok Player of the Year. His performances saw him break records previously held by France international Antoine Dupont and established him as one of the standout scrumhalves at junior level.

His form earned him exposure to the senior Springbok environment, and he has since attended alignment camps, placing him firmly on the national radar.

At franchise level, Pead has transitioned smoothly into senior rugby and has become an important player for the Lions in the United Rugby Championship. His quick service, sharp decision-making and tactical awareness have marked him as a player with long-term Test potential.

Roc Nation Sports International’s head of rugby recruiting in South Africa, Tamsanqa Ncwana, said the young scrumhalf has rare qualities.

“Haashim is a generational talent whose work ethic and technical ceiling are truly exceptional,” Ncwana said.

Pead said the move was an easy decision given the agency’s track record with top players.

“Joining the Roc Nation Sports International family is an exciting moment for me. Watching the impact they have had on the careers and lives of players I look up to, made this an easy decision,” he said.

“I’m proud of my roots in the Bo-Kaap, and as I take the next steps in my career, I’m excited to have a world-class team behind me as I look to achieve my goals both on and off the field.”

Roc Nation Sports International president Michael Yormark said Pead’s journey could inspire others.

“At Roc Nation Sports International, we look for athletes who not only excel on the pitch but also possess the character to inspire the next generation. Haashim’s journey as a professional rugby player is a story that will resonate throughout South Africa and we look forward to supporting him to reach his full potential.”

With his career continuing to gather momentum, Pead’s latest move adds to growing expectations that a Springbok debut may not be far away.
