Stormers seek spark as Bulls prepare Loftus battlefield

Predicting the outcome of a South African derby often feels like kicking a rugby ball into a swirling Cape wind. Direction shifts quickly and certainty disappears.

This season in the United Rugby Championship has already served a reminder. The Lions surged past expectations to claim the local Shield, while the Sharks toppled the Stormers in both coastal derbies despite entering those clashes as outsiders.

Now attention turns to one of South African rugby’s fiercest rivalries as the Bulls host the Stormers at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

History in the URC era leans heavily toward the Cape side. The Stormers have claimed nine victories against the Bulls’ two, including triumphs in the 2022 final and the 2023 quarterfinal. Yet when these teams collide, statistics often scatter like loose balls at the breakdown.

The North–South derby tends to unfold as a trench war of muscle and will, packed with Springbok power and collisions that echo through the stands.

Saturday’s contest also marks a milestone for Bulls flank Marco van Staden, who earns his 100th cap for the Pretoria side. Coach Johan Ackermann confirmed that the hard-edged forward will focus purely on his role in the back row rather than covering hooker duties.

“I think he is a world-class backrower and we will take it week by week to see what role he is going to play,” Ackermann said.

“We are fortunate that we have the qualities of Jan-Hendrik Wessels and Johan Grobbelaar, so selection is tough to plan. But for this weekend specifically, we felt his impact from the back row can be big for us.”

Ackermann expects the Stormers to arrive with urgency after a difficult run of results.

“We do expect a desperate team,” he admitted.

“Any time you start losing games, you come under pressure, and you become desperate. We were in that position ourselves.

“We’re still desperate because we’re not in a good position on the table yet, so we need to keep performing. But they will definitely be up for the challenge.”

Stormers assistant coach Dawie Snyman believes the derby atmosphere alone will ignite his players.

“The players won’t need any motivation. The game is probably one of the biggest for us this season,” he said.

“It is such a special occasion for us. So we will know the guys are up for it. We feel we are one or two moments away from hitting our traps.”

Snyman expects the forward battle to shape the contest.

“A guy like Wilco, coming back and starting, and we know setpiece against the Bulls is always a massive battle. The momentum starts up front, so we know we have to be sharp in that area.”

The Stormers receive a timely lift with captain Ruhan Nel returning after a lengthy injury spell to partner Damian Willemse in midfield.

“It feels very good,” Nel said. “It’s been a frustrating couple of months, but it’s great to be back with the team. To come back in a game like this, you couldn’t ask for better. I’m really excited.”

His return follows a complicated recovery.

“The initial plan after the calf tear was only a couple of weeks,” he explained. “But during the captain’s run before the Leicester Tigers game it didn’t react well and that set me back again.

“During the reconditioning block the calf healed up, but then my right achilles started giving problems. It’s what they call a paratenon injury, where you build up inflammation around the tendon.”

Watching from the stands during recent defeats proved equally frustrating.

“Any injured player feels like he could add something to the team,” Nel said. “When you’re not part of the match 23 you sit at home wishing you could help.”

Back on the field and wearing the captain’s armband again, Nel remains grounded.

“I’ve never been a guy who tries to do too much. A good team is when everyone understands their role. I know what my strengths are and if I stick to those, it can’t go wrong.”

With halfback maestros Embrose Papier and Handré Pollard guiding the Bulls, and the Stormers leaning on the creativity of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, the tactical chess match promises sparks.

In this rivalry, form fades quickly and reputation carries little weight. The only certainty is another bruising chapter in the North–South saga.

“It’s always a massive honour and privilege to captain the Stormers. But we’ve got a strong leadership group. It’s not a one-man show. It’s a group effort.”

With Embrose Papier and Handré Pollard guiding the Bulls and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu orchestrating the Stormers attack, Saturday’s clash promises another fierce chapter in one of South African rugby’s most volatile rivalries.
