Wandisile Simelane has signed a contract extension that will keep the electric backline playmaker in Cape Town until at least 2028 – a significant vote of confidence in both player and province.
Since arriving at the Stormers in early 2024, Simelane’s rise has been steady and striking. Equally comfortable slicing through midfield traffic or patrolling the backfield at fullback, the fleet-footed attacker has grown into a key cog in a backline rich with ambition and intent.

Blessed with a lethal step and an instinctive understanding of space, Simelane plays the game with a street-fighter’s feel and a chess player’s vision. Give him half a gap and he’ll prise it open; give him time and he’ll turn defence into retreat. His ability to put opponents on the back foot has made him a constant threat, and a growing asset within the Stormers’ attacking arsenal.
Director of Rugby John Dobson believes Simelane’s best rugby is still ahead of him.
“Wandi’s growth since joining us has been phenomenal. He is a naturally gifted athlete and footballer, but what has impressed us the most is the way he has applied himself to improve all areas of his game.
“He is surrounded by many talented players in our backline and has made some telling contributions within our environment both on the field and in our preparations. We are looking forward to seeing where he can go from here,” Dobson said.
For Simelane, the extension is about security and purpose. The 26-year-old is focused firmly on impact as the Stormers continue to sharpen their edge across competitions.
“There are plenty of top players in this squad and the overall environment has challenged me while also allowing me to express myself.
“I’ve got no doubt that this is the best place for me and I just want to do everything I can to help the club succeed,” Simelane said.
