Bafana Bafana open AFCON campaign with victory over Angola

CAPE TOWN – Bafana Bafana opened their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign on a positive note after securing a hard-fought victory over Angola in their opening group-stage match.

South Africa continued their positive start to the tournament after defeating Angola 2–1 in a Group B clash at the Stade de Marrakech in Morocco on Monday night.

Hugo Broos’ charges started the match on a high, carrying their impressive winning momentum into the African tournament following a successful run of results ahead of the campaign.

It was Oswin Appollis who gave Bafana Bafana the lead, calmly netting his 21st-minute strike to put South Africa 1-0 ahead.

However, Angola equalised in the 35th minute when Manuel Show pulled one back, sending both sides into the halftime break locked at 1-1.

As the second half got underway, South Africa raised the tempo, with Broos’ side showing renewed urgency as they hunted for a second goal, displaying resilience and hunger in possession.

Their efforts were finally rewarded in the 79th minute when striker Lyle Foster restored South Africa’s lead with a superb long-range strike to make it 2-1.

Bafana Bafana held onto their slender advantage to secure all three points at the Grand Stadium of Marrakech.
