CAPE TOWN – The midweek Betway Premiership fixtures delivered a mix of frustration and celebration as Betway Premiership defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs were both held to a goalless draw, while Sekhukhune United and Polokwane City secured important victories to strengthen their positions on the log.
Sundowns were left frustrated after failing to convert several promising chances, while Chiefs’ ongoing struggle in front of goal was once again evident as they battled to break down a resilient opposition defence.
A 26th-minute goal from Vincent Pule handed the Bloemfontein-based Siwelele an early lead against Sundowns at the Dr Molemela Stadium. However, Sundowns clawed their way back into the contest, with Lebo Mothiba finding the equaliser in the 73rd minute to secure a valuable point on the road.
Chiefs were held to a goalless draw by a struggling Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha.
Chippa, still searching for their second win of the campaign, remain rooted to the bottom of the log with just nine points, but showed resilience to frustrate Amakhosi throughout the match.
Sekhukhune showed clinical efficiency, putting on a composed performance to claim a crucial three points and build momentum heading into the weekend.
An early strike from Vusimuzi Mncube proved decisive as Sekhukhune secured all three points against Magesi FC. The victory lifts United to third place on the log with 25 points from 13 matches, further strengthening their push in the top half of the Betway Premiership table.
In Cape Town, Polokwane City also impressed with a disciplined display, capitalising on their opportunities to earn a deserved win at Athlone Stadium. Goals from Thabelo Tshikweta (38′) and Lebohang Nkaki (45′) proved to be the difference as Polokwane City edged past Stellenbosch FC, despite a 58th-minute strike from Langelihle Phili.
Stellies pushed hard for an equaliser but ultimately failed to secure the points at home.
