Barker applauds Stellies’ character following stoppage-time triumph over Orbit College

CAPER TOWN – Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has heaped praise on his team’s never-say-die attitude after 10-man Stellies pulled off a dramatic comeback victory against Orbit College on Wednesday evening at Olympia Park.

Despite being reduced to 10 men after Thabo Moloisane’s red card, Stellies showed immense character and determination to turn the match around in the dying moments.

Late goals from Thato Khiba in the 89th minute and Athenkosi Mcaba deep into stoppage time sealed a stunning 2–1 Betway Premiership triumph away from home, capping off a memorable night for the Cape Winelands side.

“It was massively important for us to get the win in the context of the league, and great for us to get our first away win of the season,” said Barker.

“Traditionally, we’ve been a good away team, but it’s been eluding us a bit this season, so hopefully this can be the start of many more away victories.

“And then obviously the manner in which it was done, being down a man and a goal at that time of the match, to firstly get the equaliser, which was an incredible goal by Thato Khiba and then to follow that up with the winner from Athenkosi Mcaba with his first goal, was just really special.”

The victory lifts Stellenbosch to 14th place on the log, taking their tally to 12 points after 13 matches.

Stellies have recorded three wins, seven losses, and three draws so far this season as they continue their push to climb further up the campaign.
