The Comrades Marathon has a new pacesetter, and she’s not hitting the brakes. Sue Forge has been appointed Race Director, ready to steer the world’s oldest ultramarathon toward an “exceptional experience for every runner.”
Full Steam Ahead
Forge, a seasoned event specialist starts prep immediately and officially takes the baton on 1 November 2025.
She’s set to build on past victories and is also looking to iron out the bumps from this year’s race.
“It is an honour to take on the role of Race Director.
“The Comrades Marathon is more than just a race; it is a symbol of endurance, camaraderie, and South African spirit.
“I look forward to working with the CMA Board, staff, sponsors, and the incredible volunteers to make the 99th Comrades and the centenary event the best yet.
This is to ensure the safety, innovation, and an exceptional experience for every runner,” Forge said.
Race Director Role: A Strategic Sprint
The CMA created the dedicated Race Director role to focus on safety, innovation, and the runner experience. Comrades continues to attract athletes from across South Africa and the globe.
A Rigorous Finish
The CMA chose Forge from over 100 applicants in a transparent selection process.
After multiple rounds of interviews, the Board unanimously agreed to appoint Forge as the frontrunner to lead Comrades into its next century.
Experience in Every Stride
With 20+ years in athletics and mass participation events, Forge’s resume reads like a who’s who of South African marathons.
She participated in various capacities at the Two Oceans, Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, SPAR Women’s Challenge, Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, and more.
International experience includes the Confederation of African Athletics Cross Country Championships.
CMA Chairperson Mqondisi Ngcobo said,
“Sue brings unparalleled expertise, a proven track record in major sporting events, and a passion for the running community.
“That will help us deliver unforgettable experiences for runners and spectators alike.”
Looking to the 99th and 100th
Forge will report to General Manager Alain Dalais and work closely with CMA staff and the Board to align operations with strategic priorities.
Having served on the Race Advisory Committee, she knows the route inside out.
Dalais said,
“Sue brings a wealth of experience, passion, and dedication to this role.
“I know that the Comrades community will all benefit from this appointment, and my team and I are very much looking forward to working with her.”
With Forge at the helm, the Comrades Marathon is ready to blaze the trail toward its centenary, promising a race experience as thrilling as a sprint down the home stretch.
