Ellis Park braced for rugby’s version of a street fight

Ellis Park doesn’t forgive. It doesn’t do hospitality. When the Wallabies run out on Saturday evening to open their Rugby Championship campaign, they’ll be stepping into 80 minutes of controlled violence at altitude against a Springbok side unbeaten by Australia at this fortress.

“This is going to be a bigger game than what we have faced so far this season,” said Bok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick.

“We are fully aware of the challenge ahead, and we know how dangerous Australia are in the set pieces and with ball in hand.

“They played well in their last two matches against the British & Irish Lions, losing the second Test in the last few minutes, while they won the last match, so it’s going to be a big battle.”

Boks in the Now

Captain Siya Kolisi will win his 94th cap in an unfamiliar Test role, wearing the No 8 jersey for the first time. He’s parking all thoughts of the looming New Zealand tour.

“The talk in our camp has solely been on Australia. We saw how they played against the British & Irish Lions, and we’ve been in the position they are now in the past, so it would be foolish to think that they won’t throw everything at us. We are certainly not thinking about the New Zealand matches now.”

The “favourites” tag? Kolisi kicks it into touch.

“We don’t think of such things. For us, it’s all about our standards, and after looking back at our last four matches, we’ve worked hard to ensure that we are at the level we need to be going into this match.”

On his positional shift: “My role will change slightly in the lineouts and the scrums, but other than that I’ll be fulfilling my usual role.

“Playing No 8 at the Hollywoodbets Sharks certainly helped me, although the role here is different. I’m also not the same type of player as Jasper (Wiese) or Duane (Vermeulen) in terms of my size, so I’m going to give what I can offer.”

Kolisi knows the breakdown will be a minefield.

“The breakdowns are going to be a big area of the game, so myself, Marco (van Staden) and Pieter-Steph (du Toit) have an important job, although that said, the breakdowns are a team effort.”

The Boks’ 5/3 bench split means Cobus Reinach, Canan Moodie and Damian Willemse are the only backs in reserve, leaving Franco Mostert and Kwagga Smith as the lone non-front-row forwards.

Wallabies Roll the Dice with O’Connor

Australia make just one change from the side that beat the Lions in Sydney: James O’Connor at fly-half, replacing the concussed Tom Lynagh.

It’s the veteran’s first Test in two years. It’s a gamble, given that if O’Connor goes down, Nic White or Andrew Kellaway must step into the pivot role.

O’Connor arrives with confidence after helping the Crusaders to a Super Rugby title, but Ellis Park is a different beast. Only three Wallabies in the starting XV,  James Slipper, Taniela Tupou and Nic White have played here before.

Slipper anchors the front row with Billy Pollard and Tupou. Nick Frost and Will Skelton lock the scrum, while Tom Hooper, Fraser McReight and captain Harry Wilson make up a lively back row.

But the absence of Rob Valetini, Australia’s most destructive carrier  is a major blow, leaving Skelton, Wilson and Tupou to shoulder the heavy carrying.

In midfield, Len Ikitau and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii start together for a seventh straight Test, with Suaalii making his African debut. Dylan Pietsch and Max Jorgensen patrol the wings, Tom Wright at full-back.

The bench has Brandon Paenga-Amosa, Angus Bell and Zane Nonggorr in the front row, with Jeremy Williams, Langi Gleeson and Nick Champion de Crespigny as forward cover. Tate McDermott offers energy at scrum-half, with Kellaway covering the backline.

Where It Will Be Won and Lost

Wallaby coach Joe Schmidt knows what’s coming.

“The group has had a good week of preparation, adjusting pretty well to the time zone and the altitude here in Johannesburg. There’s not many bigger Tests than playing South Africa on their home turf and we know we’re going to need to be at our best on Saturday night.”

The contest will hinge on two old truths: dominate the breakdown, dominate the match; own the set-piece, own the scoreboard. Italy exposed Bok vulnerabilities at ruck time in July, forcing turnovers on the deck.

This is no doubt a template Australia will surely study. But the scrum? That’s Ellis Park’s traditional trial by fire, and if the Wallabies can’t hold the Bok shove, players like Grant Williams and Manie Libbok will have free rein on front-foot ball.

Ellis Park has a way of turning good teams brittle and brittle teams to dust. The Wallabies come armed with ambition; the Boks with history and home steel.

By full-time, one will leave with their lungs burning and their campaign burning brighter and the other just gasping for air.
