Clocking 31 minutes and 16 seconds, she celebrated National Women’s Day in style finishing ahead of 15 000 participants clad in a sea of pink while raising awareness for PinkDrive.

The 26-year-old ran one of the fastests 10km times ever recorded for a woman in the Mother City. She earned R30 000 in prize money for her efforts.

This victory came just a week after Njoki set a new All-comers record of 30:14 in Durban, repeating the impressive double she achieved in 2024 by winning both the Durban and Cape Town races.

While she had hoped for Durban’s perfect weather, Cape Town delivered a cooler, cloud-covered morning. The forecasted rain stayed away, setting the stage for an exciting race which started in front of the City Hall finishing on the Grand Parade.

“The race was enjoyable,” said a beaming Njoki.

“I enjoy running. I came here to run my own race. The fans were amazing, cheering me on. They motivated me all the way.

“Cape Town is tough, but I prepared mentally for it. This season I told myself I must come here and run a good race.”

Asked what message she wanted to share on National Women’s Day, Njoki said:

“Let’s come together, support each other, motivate each other, and empower women. When I go back to Kenya, I’ll know I have inspired women in Cape Town through this race.”

Njoki lead a Kenyan clean sweep with compatriots Jane Chacha (32:19) and Clare Ndiwa (32:20) finishing second and third, respectively.

Ethiopian Selam Gebre (32:32) was fourth with Lesotho’s Neheng Khatala (32:48) in fifth place.

South Africa’s Karabo More was the first local athlete to cross the line, finishing eighth in 34:05.

“It feels great to be the first South African,” she said.

“I saw the big girls and thought, ‘oh my goodness,’ but I just ran with heart and my own race. I’m looking forward to Joburg – I’ll run my race again and push to the end.”

Stillwater Sports Managing Director Michael Meyer praised the performances:

“Congratulations to Christine Njoki on an inspiring victory, and well done to the elite field for such high-level racing.

“A huge thank you to the 15,000 women who filled Cape Town’s streets … your energy made the day special.

“We’re proud to empower women through sport and can’t wait for the Joburg race on 17 August.”
