CAPE TOWN – It has been a sad day for the Capetonians, not only because heavy cold rains have been hitting the Cape, but an end of the top-flight football from the Betway Premiership giant.
Following Wednesday’s results in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Promotion play-off that saw Orbit College being promoted to the Betway Premiership, Cape Town City was left shocked as they were relegated to the second division.
A 47th-minute goal from Letsie Koapeng was enough for the Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit as they defeated the Citizens 1-0 at Olympia Park Stadium in Rustenburg.
A loss in today’s encounter saw the Cape outfit losing one game and playing a draw in two matches with them lying in the second spot with just two points with a game still to play next week on Monday against Casric Stars.
While it’s the heavy pouring of tears from Cape Town fans because of this loss, it means there is no team from the City of Cape Town in the Betway Premiership.
However, it’s tears of joy in the North West as they finally have a team that will represent the province in the top-flight football of South Africa since the relegation of Platinum Stars back in 2018.
City will have no one but themselves to blame after having the worst season since their establishment in 2016 following their acquisition of the status of Mpumalanga Black Aces.
The Citizen finished in 15th position in the 2024/25 Betway Premiership. What will happen next, there’s no one knows but the weather is set to hit the Cape for the rest of the week with heavy rains set to continue to pour and so with the Cape Town fan’s tears.
