Damian Willemse – from prodigy to Stormers centurion and Springbok superstar

Cape Town – May 7, 2025 – When Damian Willemse runs out onto the pitch at DHL Stadium this Saturday, the cheers from Cape Town will not only celebrate his talent — but also his journey. The Springbok star will earn his 100th cap for the Stormers in a United Rugby Championship (URC) clash against the Dragons, marking a major milestone in a career that began as a teenager just out of school.

“It’s going to be a special occasion playing in my 100th game”

“Coming in at 18, I had just finished matric and three months later, I made my debut. All those opportunities made me into the player that I am today,” Willemse said ahead of the match.

Still only 27 years old — and celebrating his birthday today — Willemse has achieved more than most in his rugby life: two Rugby World Cups, a URC title, and the respect of global rugby fans for his skill, vision, and adaptability.

A Story Rooted in Strand

Born in Strand, a coastal town on the outskirts of Cape Town, Willemse’s journey began amid adversity. Like many communities shaped by apartheid-era planning, Strand struggles with unemployment and social challenges. But Willemse turned hardship into drive, using rugby as both an escape and a vehicle for change.

Educated at Paul Roos Gymnasium, he quickly rose through the ranks of youth rugby, representing South Africa Schools and Western Province. By 18, he was in the Stormers squad — the start of a journey that has now spanned eight seasons.

Stormers Through and Through

Willemse made his debut in 2017 under coaches Robbie Fleck and Paul Feeney, who he credits for trusting him early on. He’s since played across the backline — fullback, flyhalf, inside centre — adapting seamlessly and becoming the ultimate utility back.

“It’s not really about the number on your back. We try to put ourselves in scenarios that suit the opposition. It’s about reading the game and adapting,” he explained.

In 2022, Willemse helped lead the Stormers to their first-ever URC title, defeating the Bulls in the final. He then capped off a remarkable run by starting at fullback in the Springboks’ 2023 Rugby World Cup final win over the All Blacks.

Bouncing Back from Injury

The past year has tested Willemse physically and mentally. A groin injury, followed by a finger fracture, kept him out of the Rugby Championship and end-of-year tour in 2024. It was a long road back.

“Being out of the game gave me a reality check,” he said. “It made me appreciate being able to do the things I love. Injuries are part of the game, and I was forced to deal with them back-to-back.”

Now fully fit, Willemse has returned to form and is poised to start alongside a full-strength backline this weekend — including Manie Libbok, Warrick Gelant, and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu.

“It’s always been either Manie, or Sacha, or me that have been injured, but now all four of us are healthy and ready to play. Over the last few weeks, we’ve really started to synergise.”

The Next Generation

Willemse sees a bright future in his teammates — especially Feinberg-Mngomezulu.

“Sacha is a brilliant player. He’s stepped up and put us in a good position, especially in the Benetton game with his kicking and creativity. He’s a real wildcard, and we need him to keep doing what he’s doing.”

Saturday will mark the first time this exciting quartet starts together — a prospect that could light up the stadium.

The Journey Continues

With 100 matches under his belt, two World Cups, and a leadership role in a rising Stormers squad, Willemse’s legacy is already secure. But at just 27, he’s far from finished.

“A special occasion is cool,” Willemse said, “but the first priority is to win the game and make ourselves and our fans proud.”

The Dragons await, but the bigger picture is clear: Damian Willemse’s century is a celebration of perseverance, talent, and impact — both on and off the field.
