‘Special kid’ Jonny could replace Sacha at 12 for Stormers says Dobson

Cape Town – The Stormers 29-10 bonus-point victory over the Lions at the DHL Stadium came at a huge cost after the home side again lost Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu in the first half due to injury.

The 22-year-old, who started at inside centre alongside fellow Springboks fly-half Manie Libbok, was forced off the field in the 27th minute after taking a huge hit from giant Lions tighthead prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye.

Feinberg-Mngomezulu endured a frustrating period on the sidelines of late as he was ruled out of the latter part of the Springboks’ Rugby Championship campaign due to a knee injury.

He briefly returned to action for the Stormers earlier this month against the Sharks in Durban but only lasted 30 minutes before being forced off due to a head knock.

Stormers boss John Dobson admitted he is unsure of the extent of Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s latest injury.

“He’s got a hip pointer, I don’t know where that is or what it is, but it’s funny, in the old days lammies (dead legs) and now haematomas, knocks and contusions, ankle sprains, he’s now got a hip pointer,” Dobson explained.

“I don’t know (the extent of the injury). I’ve just said to him now it would be nice for him to get to half-time for us at some stage, but apparently you don’t know with hip pointers for a while.

“It could be two days, could be a couple of weeks.”

Dobson bemoaned the timing of the injury as Feinberg-Mngomezulu hit the ground running on his return to action and looked dangerous on attack.

“I thought why it was so poor because he was looking so good, he was looking amazing, and then JL (Jean-Luc du Plessis) comes on and he gets two contusions,” he added.

“He should have come off but there was nothing left (on the bench). So we were under pressure then for a while, ended up with Paul de Wet on the wing.”

The Stormers mentor alluded to the fact that the 21-year-old Jonathan Roche might come into the selection picture at inside centre if Feinberg-Mngomezulu doesn’t recover from his hip injury.

Dobson confirmed that Leolin Zas will definitely miss the Sharks game because of injury. He now has the option of Seabelo Senatla and Angelo Davids covering wing and moving Suleiman Hartzenberg to outside centre and Ruan Nel to the inside.

“Yes, the other option if Sacha doesn’t make it, is to bring a guy like Jonny Roche in at 12. We got to back him at some stage. I think that kid is special. We either move everyone in one position, or we put Jonny in,” he added.
