Cape Town Stadium – The Blitzboks will make their first appearance in a Cape Town Sevens final since 2020 when they face France at 19:11 on Sunday.
South Africa beat Spain in a tense semi by 19-12 after the Spanish led 12-5 at half-time.
Spain will now contest the third-place playoff against Fiji at 6:03pm after the Island Nation were pipped 19-17 in the other semifinal with a dramatic last-gasp conversion from the touchline.
Spain and Fiji faced each other in last week’s Cup Final in Dubai where Fiji were crowned champions.
One of the Blitzboks try scorers Tristan Leyds (video below) was over the moon after he made it to his first final since joining the Springbok Sevens side.
“Yes, it’s a very special moment and I am just trying to take everything in,” said Leyds.
“It’s the furthest I ever got on the circuit especially in front of my home crowd. Since I joined in July last year, it’s always been our goal to get into a final. Today was a bit tough but we managed our worth.
“It was very special to get a bronze medal at the Olympics, but when the pre-season started we said that’s in the past. We can only build from that.
“There are a lot of young guys in the side now and hopefully we can do it for all of them and the awesome crowd that came out to support us,” he added.
