CAPE TOWN – Springbok Women have run riot over Spain scoring six tries as the home side won by 36-19 at DHL Stadium on Thursday.
Swys de Bruin’s charges had a shaky start in their test match against Spain, Sanelisiwe Charlie received a yellow card for repeated infringement after seven minutes.
At 19 minutes, flyhalf Amalia Argudo stormed through the Bok Women defence to break the deadlock as she took her side to 0-7.
It wasn’t long after Bok Women number 8 Aseza Hele levelled up with a try, with flyhalf Nadine Roos missing the conversion – the score was 5-7 after 23 minutes.
At 35, hooker Lindelwa Gwala took South Africa to 12-7 with her try that came from a strong maul from Spain’s 5-metre line. The match went to the interval with South Africa leading by 12-7.
In the second half, Bok Women picked up where they left off in the first half, Gwala doubled up her tries in 53 minutes taking the score to 19-7.
Fullback Libbie Janse van Rensburg announced herself to the scoresheet with her try, the Bok Women fourth try taking the score to 24-5 in 60 minutes.
Spain tried to get back to the game as Martina Maquez added to her team’s scoreline, with the score moving to 24-12.
Lock Vaina Ubisi wasn’t going to be left out in the try party as she took her side’s score 31-12 before winger Shaunique Hess’ round things off for the home side winning the match by 36-12.
