CAPE TOWN – Stormers Director of Rugby and head coach John Dobson has revealed the stress he’s been having regarding the flyhalf position in preparations for the new season.
Having both Springbok flyhaves Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Manie Libbok at his disposal, it’s a puzzle Dobson doesn’t know how to solve yet.
Libbok has been a regular first choice flyhalf for Dobson in the past three United Rugby Championships (URC) seasons. Meanwhile, on the national level, the Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus has recently opted for Feinberg-Mngomezulu ahead of Libbok and Handre Pollard at 10.
But how is the puzzle solved at the club level, Dobson explained his headache.
“I don’t know how to solve it yet. Look though, you want them both on the field, both in the team. I can’t solve it yet,” said Dobson.
“I used to say I hoped one of them was injured, but I don’t want that to be true. So I don’t know.
“I mean look at Damian [Willemse] and Warrick [Gelant], Warrick’s been superb for us. Damian’s one of the best full-backs in the world.
“If those guys are all fit on the field – I don’t know how we fit them. Dawie Snyman, our assistant coach said we just throw the jerseys on the front – seven jerseys and we just choose and go with whatever number they’ve got.”
Dobson has also explained rumours that Stormers were in the race to sign the Springbok captain, Siya Kolisi.
Last week, Kolisi rejoined the Sharks after a surprise exit from his French Top 14 club, Racing 92 after one season at the helm of his three-year contract period.
“Given what we’ve been through, our new ownership wants to make it sustainable at a level,” adds Dobson.
“We want to just sort of get the books to balance a bit and see.
“It would’ve been a bit too much for us right now financially, but maybe one day we can expect something like that, his move down here.”
