Springbok Women run riot over Barbarians

CAPE TOWN – Springbok Women showed a strong character with nine tries as to demolish the Barbarians 59-17 at DHL Stadium on Saturday.

South Africa played  curtain raiser match before the Springbok versus All Blacks much anticipated fixture.

Swys de Bruin’s charges didn’t waste anytime breaking the deadlock through hooker Lindelwa Gwala’s try after 3 minutes. This comes after Barbarians were penalised for offside, Bok Women opted for a kicking in the corner for lineout.

The home side had a 5-0 lead. Right lock Vainah Ubisi added to the scoresheet with her try, taking the Boks Women to a comfortable 12-0 lead after 10 minutes.

It was starting to be a rain try day at DHL Stadium after the hosts were in the driving sit, overpowering the visitor on the ball. Winger Ayanda Malinga scored the Springbok Women third try taking the tally to 19-0 after 17 minutes.

After 22 minutes, the Barbarians winger Lydia Thompson stormed through the try line to get her side something to fight for with her try, taking the scoreline 19-5. It didn’t take long as Thompson grabbed her brace after 29 minutes taking the score to 19-10.

A fourth try from the Springbok Women came up just for minutes before the interval courtesy of Aseza Hele as she takes her side to 26-10. Flanker Sinazo Mcatshulwa wrapped matters up with the team’s fifth try taking the score to 33-10 at halftime.

Whaterver Barbarians coach said in the changing seemed to be working as the visitors started the second half on a high. Scrumhalf Kendra Cocksedge gave her side hope with her side third try, taking the score to 33-17.

At 66 minutes, substitute Yonela Ngxingolo bulldozed her way through the try line, a ball came from the rolling maul extending the score further to 40-17.

Flyhalf Nadine Roos who before got substituted for Libbie Janse van Rensburg, added to South Africa’s try tallies with the Bok Women seventh try of the game as the score line moved to 47-10 after 70 minutes.

Felicia Jacobs didn’t want to be left behind from the try party as she adds to the home side try buckets taking the score to 52-17 after 74 minutes. Malinga was a star of the show as she adds her second try of the match as Bok Women moves to 59-17. South Africa took a comfortable win at DHL Stadium.
