CAPE TOWN – Former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana defender Fabian McCarthy has applauded the work South African national team head coach Hugo Broos has done with the national team.
McCarthy who is now an MTN8 ambassador believes Broos has changed the standard of football in the national team.
The 47-year-old, says Broos has also changed people’s perspective about Bafana Bafana.
“I see Bafana Bafana definitely challenging for the next AFCON. I can tell you now that Bafana is going to qualify for the next World Cup. And if they do, I’m going to save and go watch at least one game,” said McCarthy.
“It’s either in the US or Mexico, but wherever the World Cup is going to be.
“I really like the way the coach is going about his business, because there’s no favours, there’s no this, he does it on merit, he selects, he gives boys a chance.
Broos’ charges finished third place in the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
McCarthy threw words of advice to players on how to cement their place in the national set up.
“If those boys are not consistent when they come back into their clubs after the national team, they’re not going to make it to Bafana because they must know it’s not about playing two, three, four games well,” he said.
“For players to stay up there, it’s about being consistent, delivering, working hard, knowing what position you play and giving your best every time you get an opportunity to play or when you go to training because.
“You don’t know what tomorrow holds or who is watching you. So I think the development of football in our country, we just need to go back to the roots and do it properly.”
