CAPE TOWN – The MTN8 semi-final first leg between Cape Town City and Orlando Pirates ended 1-1 at DHL Stadium on Wednesday night.
The game started on a high with both teams testing each other making dangerous passes but the score remained the same after 10 minutes.
With the supporters brazing the cold DHL Stadium, as you would recall this fixture was supposed to be played on Tuesday but due to bad weather in Cape Town the Premier Soccer League (PSL) moved it to Wednesday.
With most of the supporters at the stadium being the Pirates ones, their singing efforts and bravery were rewarded in the 14th minute when Bucs young winger Relebohile Mofokeng broke the deadlock. The Citizen defence was caught off guard when a pass landed on Mofokeng’s boots who didn’t make any mistake as he beat Darren Keet giving the Soweto giant a 1-0 lead.
The visitors were the better team in the attacking department while City had few chances, but the match went on to the interval with Pirates leading 1-0.
As the second half started, the match tempo picked up where it left off in the first half, both sides were hungry for goals.
But it was City who was pressing looking for an equalizer, indeed the doors opened for the home side as attacking midfielder Jaeden Rhodes levelled matters after 61 minutes making it 1-1.
The rest of the second didn’t produce much, both sides were playing careful football seeing that no one wanted to make a mistake. The game ended with 1-all going to the second leg.
