STELLENBOSCH – Stellenbosch FC have continued to make their Cape Winelands supporters smile after a crucial 3-1 victory over TS Galaxy in the MTN8 competition quarterfinal at Danie Craven on Sunday.
It was 7 minutes where Stellies found themselves close to break the deadlock through defender Fawaaz Basadien freekick but that didn’t result in any fruitful results as the score remained the same.
Steve Barker’s charges came close once after Andre de Jong’s strike was comfortably saved by goalkeeper Wensten van der Linde after 13 minutes. It was the Stellenbosch side who were the better side as they kept on pushing trying to crack TS Galaxy defence.
Antonio van Wyk had his fair share as his clear chance to put the home side in front went wide.
Christmas came early for the visitors as Kamogelo Sebelebele put Galaxy in front after 17th minutes after a crucial mistake by Stellies defenders, taking the score 1-0.
It didn’t take long for the home side to level matters following countless mistakes from the Galaxy defender who almost collided with van der Linde. Jayden Adams used that in his advantage as he equalised for the Stellies after 24 minutes taking the score to 1-1.
Both sides were looking dangerous when approaching each other’s half, but it was de Jong’s header who was the difference after he headed from the corner putting the hosts in front with just 5 minutes left before the end of the interval, 2-1.
The game went on to the end of the first half with Stellenbosch leading 2-1.
As the second half started, Stellenbosch continued where they left off in the first half. In 56 minutes, Basadien netted Stellies third goal 3-1, using wisely a pass that came from their striker Iqraam Rayners.
The rest of the second half didn’t show any fruitful results. TS Galaxy finished the match with 10-men after MacBeth Mahlangu received a second yellow card for a dangerous tackle.
It was the home team who dictated matters as the match ended as Stellenbosch FC progressed to the MTN8 semi-final.
