Cape Town Spurs and Ernst Middendorp part ways

CAPE TOWN – Following the team’s relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship, Cape Town Spurs and head coach Ernst Middendorp have mutually agreed to terminate their working relationship with immediate effect.

This comes after the Urban Warriors lost 19 DStv Premiership games and finished the league with just 23 points, which made them get a straight relegation from the top flight.

Middendorp took reigns from the embattled Shaun Bartlett who was sacked by the Ikamva’s side.

Spurs announced on Monday, where the club conveyed sincere gratitude to the German mentor.

“On behalf of the board and the club, we would like to convey our sincere gratitude to Ernst for his commitment and dedication over the recent months,” said CEO Alexi Efstathiou.

“The spirited fight that he was able to master in the second phase with our team was nothing short of amazing.

“Unfortunately, due to the restrictive financial environment of the NFD, the club was unable to extend the relationship.

“There is nothing sinister in the decision as the coach clearly indicated that he was willing to stay on and assist the team in getting promoted back to the PSL.”

The club says it will announce the way forward in due course.
