CAPE TOWN – Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis is confident that her side will come out top in their second match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
South Africa will face the tough test on Friday morning – SA time in the Group G encounter against also wounded Argentina.
Both teams will have a lot to prove with the Argentina side having lost their opening match as well, to Italy.
Ellis’ charges will be looking forward to rectifying the ruined chances from the Sweden match – something she said they worked hard at training to make sure the team score the goals.
“I think after a magnificent performance against Sweden, we take a lot of positives out of that and I think we’ve been defensively very sound right until the end. I know we created so many chances,” said Ellis.
“So going to this game against Argentina, it’s a must win – it’s a game that we must not only win but score goals so that we could have realistic chances at the end.
“We’ve analysed them and I’m sure they did the same too on us, but we have taken the positives so we can be better, especially in the final third. We have worked a lot in our finishing to make sure we are sharp.”
Ellis says the goal is to finish top of their group and qualify for the next stage of the tournament.
Desiree Ellis added: “We know we have to win the game, and so does Argentina as well – so we have worked a lot on what we are good at,” she said.
“Now we have to show what we are good at when we have the ball, we didn’t protect the ball as much as we can and we didn’t move the ball around quickly like we used to. It’s not going to be an easy game against them but we have done our homework.”
