Mashele in form for FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN

JOHANNESBURG – Taking place this coming Sunday, 24 September 2017, the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN has attracted the attention of South African Cross Country Champion, Precious Mashele.

A change in training group seems to have revitalized Mashele. The 26-year-old used to train on the grounds of the University of Pretoria with friend and rival, Stephen Mokoka.  Realising that if he wanted to make his mark he needed to make a move, Mashele has been seen running around Zoo Lake under the guidance of legendary marathoner Hendrick Ramaala.

The move has paid dividends, as Mashele claimed the tough SA Cross Country title on Saturday, 09 September in Potchefstroom. He destroyed the likes of Joel Mmone, David Manja and Thabang Mosiako – all of whom will be joining him on the start line on Sunday, 24 September in what will be a grudge match up.

“I ran a controlled race on Saturday (9 September) and was able to command the race. Cross Country is tough, so I think I will be ready for the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN,” said Mashele.  “I know it won’t be easy. Stephen (Mokoka) will be back and he is in great shape lately.”

The FNB “RunYourCity” Series has become synonymous with assembling a quality field and this year’s line-up will be no different.  Stephen Mokoka will be using the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN as his final tune up for his onslaught on his own SA 10km Record at the FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN.

Mashele has not only won the SA Cross Country Title recently, but has also shown impressive form on the road, with his 61:56 Personal Best for the Half Marathon in June.

Joel Mmone finished second to Mashele at the SA Cross Country Championships with Thabang Mosiako third. These two, along with Mokoka, will keep Mashele honest.  Mmone has had an impressive year to date, with Personal Bests in the 3000m (8:08.11 in the rarefied air of Potchefstroom – 15 March), 10 000m (28:49.92 – Durban, 28 February) and 63:01 in the Half Marathon (Port Elizabeth 24 June).  Mosiako has had an even better year, with Personal Bests in the 3000m (8:09.09 – Potchefstroom, 15 March), 5000m (14:03.84 – Potchefstroom, 21 April), 10 000m (29:00.38 – Durban, 28 February) 10km (29:29 – Benoni, 29 January) and 63:09 in the Half Marathon on 24 June in Port Elizabeth.

About the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN sponsorship:

FNB Business is proud to be the title sponsor of the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN.  This sponsorship forms part of our ongoing strategy to support local and community events that focus on a healthy lifestyle and family involvement. Road running is an inclusive sport that allows us to engage with a larger audience and support a sporting disciplines that advance our commitment to building, enduring and rewarding relationships with communities we are a part of.

We believe in supporting a race that encourages people to run and know their city; a race that strives to re-invent how people perceive and experience the city centre. The FNB Bank City buildings are well-known and iconic buildings in the Johannesburg CBD and the precinct was recently revamped in 2015 with three lifestyle concepts of Work, Eat & Play in mind. For many years it has been viewed as traditional banking headquarters; however the revamp has positively changed the experience of the precinct.

Sponsoring the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN is aligned to our belief in the importance of rejuvenating and reviving the city centre so it remains relevant and an important part of Johannesburg’s Heritage.
