WILLIAM Kaptein won the TymeBank Langa Freedom Day 10km race yesterday morning for the second consecutive year. The race forms part of the celebration of the Langa township's 100th anniversary. Captain, who represented the athletics club TymeBank Langa, covered the 10 km in 29 minutes and 59 seconds in rainy conditions. Kaptein was the only athlete who completed the race in faster than 30 minutes. His Langa teammates Tendai Zimuto (30:02) and Edward Jack (30:09) were close on his heels in second and third place respectively. These three walked away with the team prize together with Raydon Balie (31:50), who also runs for Langa these days. In the 40-49 age group for men, Rabson Chigara (32:09) reigned supreme. Nedbank's Ricardo Blaauw (32:17) and Richmond Magengu (33:56) were the second and third veterans. The first junior across the finish line was Sive Bheba (33:00) from Totalsports VOB. His VOB teammate Inam Mbatsa (33:05) was second with Waylen Jooste (34:06) of UWK in third place. In the women's race, Langa once again walked away with the laurels. Just like last year, Fortunate Chidzivo (36:22) was the fastest woman. Beta Sitariko (36:41), who does not belong to a club, was second. Another Langa athlete, Alexa Townsend (39:01), was the third woman to finish.
